Extended Shaft Support & Positive Locking for Industrial Machinery

Straight-shaft bearing positions often need more support & a practical way to secure the inner ring without machining shoulders or adding conventional locknut arrangements. Timken wide inner ring bearings extend the inner ring beyond the raceway to provide additional shaft support while offering eccentric collar, concentric collar or setscrew locking options across Fafnir bearing families.

For applications requiring the bearing already assembled into a base-mounted housing, Timken Pillow Block Mounted Bearings provides the closely related housed-unit format. Buyers comparing the underlying bearing design with conventional radial bearings can also explore Timken Ball Bearings.

Wide inner ring bearings appear across agricultural machinery, conveyors, processing equipment & industrial shaft systems. Correct replacement depends on more than bore diameter because inner-ring width, outside-ring geometry, locking style, seals, lubrication arrangement & housing compatibility can vary between series.

What Are Timken Wide Inner Ring Bearings?

Wide inner ring bearings are single-row radial ball bearings with an inner ring extended beyond the conventional raceway width.

Timken describes the internal construction as fundamentally similar to a deep-race single-row radial bearing, allowing the bearing to accommodate radial, thrust & combined loads while retaining low-friction ball-bearing characteristics.

The extended inner ring provides additional shaft support & creates the geometry required for the applicable shaft-locking arrangement.

Depending on the series, the bearing can be secured using:

► Eccentric self-locking collar
► Concentric locking collar
► Specially designed setscrews

Timken wide inner ring ball bearings are also available with cylindrical or spherical outside diameters.

A cylindrical or straight outside diameter is intended for a corresponding straight-bored housing. A spherical outside diameter works with a suitable spherical housing seat & can accommodate limited shaft or housing misalignment within the intended mounted-bearing arrangement.

Common terminology includes wide inner ring bearing, wide inner ring ball bearing, extended inner ring bearing, Fafnir wide inner ring bearing, eccentric collar bearing, self-locking collar bearing, setscrew locking bearing & mounted bearing insert.

Why Choose Timken Wide Inner Ring Bearings?

The extended-inner-ring concept combines shaft support with practical mounting arrangements suited to machinery where straightforward installation & dependable shaft retention are important.

Additional Support Along the Shaft

Extending the inner ring increases the bearing's contact length along the shaft compared with a conventional narrow inner ring.

This geometry is particularly relevant where the bearing itself forms part of a mounted-unit system.

Direct Mounting on Straight Shafts

Timken wide inner ring designs can be positioned on straight shafts without requiring the traditional combination of shoulders, locknuts or adapters used by some other bearing arrangements.

The exact installation method depends on the locking style.

Eccentric Self-Locking Collar Options

Timken's self-locking collar uses mating eccentric cam surfaces on the collar & extended inner ring.

Once engaged, the collar grips the shaft through a positive binding action. The collar setscrew provides supplementary locking.

This system is strongly associated with Fafnir wide inner ring bearings used in agricultural & industrial machinery.

For buyers specifically dealing with collar-secured bearing configurations, Timken Collar Ball Bearings provides another closely related bearing category.

Multiple Seal Configurations

Wide inner ring families include different sealing arrangements for varying operating environments.

Timken's RR & RA-RR families incorporate positive-contact R-seal designs intended to help protect against contaminants while retaining lubricant.

Seal construction should always be confirmed against the exact bearing reference because it varies between series.

Cylindrical & Spherical Outside Diameters

Outside-ring geometry affects housing compatibility.

Straight-OD bearings require a corresponding straight-bored housing while spherical-OD versions are intended for compatible spherical seats.

A matching bore diameter therefore does not make two wide inner ring bearings interchangeable.

Common Applications

Extended inner ring bearings are particularly established in machinery where shaft support, contamination protection & practical installation need to work together.

Agricultural Machinery

Agricultural equipment represents an important application area for Fafnir wide inner ring bearings.

Dust, crop residue, moisture, vibration & seasonal operating cycles place particular demands on bearing positions.

Timken's RR & RA-RR families provide combinations of extended or wide inner rings, locking collars, seal arrangements & outside-ring geometries suited to different agricultural machinery requirements.

Conveyor Systems

Rollers, drive shafts & material-transfer equipment can use mounted bearings where straightforward shaft locking & housing installation are valuable.

When investigating repeated conveyor bearing failures, inspect the shaft, alignment, housing, seals, lubrication & contamination exposure rather than treating the insert as an isolated component.

Material Handling Equipment provides a relevant pathway into the wider equipment environment surrounding conveyor & transfer applications.

Processing Equipment

Food, agricultural & industrial processing machinery can contain multiple bearing positions exposed to different loads & contamination levels.

Record the bearing fitted at each position rather than assuming visually similar inserts are interchangeable across the machine.

Fans & Driven Equipment

Wide inner ring bearings can support rotating shafts within compatible mounted-bearing arrangements used around fans, blowers & general driven machinery.

Noise, heat or vibration at the bearing position can also indicate imbalance, alignment problems or drive-system issues.

Machinery Rebuilds

A dismantled machine may arrive at a workshop with incomplete bearing identification.

Where the original reference remains readable, preserve it before cleaning or removing the bearing. Where markings have been lost, dimensional measurement becomes important but should be combined with locking, seal & outside-diameter identification.

Product Selection Guide

A reliable replacement sequence is:

Bearing reference → shaft size → locking style → outside diameter → inner-ring width → seals → lubrication → housing → load & operating conditions

This sequence keeps the replacement focused on the complete bearing configuration rather than bore diameter alone.

Record the Complete Bearing Reference

Fafnir wide inner ring families include multiple design variations.

Depending on the application, references may fall within families such as:

► RR
► RA-RR
► KRR
► KRRB
► G-KRR
► G-KRRB
► GRA-RR
► GRA-RRB
► UEL 200

Prefixes & suffixes can identify meaningful differences in outside-ring geometry, sealing or lubrication configuration.

Do not shorten the reference when recording the existing bearing.

Confirm Shaft Diameter

Measure the shaft or bearing bore accurately when the complete reference cannot be identified.

Timken's UEL 200 family, for example, includes both metric & imperial bore configurations.

A UEL205 uses a 25 mm bore while UEL207-20 uses a 1 1/4-inch bore & UEL208-24 uses a 1 1/2-inch bore.

Calipers (Digital / Manual) can assist with shaft, bore & bearing measurements during identification.

Identify the Locking Style

The locking arrangement is one of the defining features of a wide inner ring bearing.

Determine whether the existing bearing uses:

► Eccentric locking collar
► Concentric locking collar
► Inner-ring setscrews

Do not substitute one locking system solely because the bore & outside diameter appear to match.

Check Cylindrical or Spherical Outside Diameter

Housing geometry must correspond with the bearing outside ring.

Timken identifies both cylindrical & spherical outside-diameter configurations across its wide inner ring families.

A spherical-OD bearing is intended to operate in the corresponding spherical seat. A straight-OD bearing belongs in the appropriate straight-bored housing.

Measure the Inner Ring

The inner-ring extension is part of the bearing's functional geometry.

For example, Timken lists the UEL205 with a 34.9 mm inner-ring width while its outside-ring width is 17 mm.

That difference illustrates why a wide inner ring bearing should not be identified solely by bore & outside diameter.

Confirm the Seal Arrangement

Seal identification becomes particularly important in agricultural & contaminated environments.

Timken's RR family includes different sealed configurations while RA-RR bearings use positive-contact land-riding R-seals.

Inspect the existing bearing reference & technical data before assuming another wide inner ring bearing offers equivalent contamination protection.

Determine Whether Relubrication Is Required

Some Fafnir wide inner ring configurations are relubricatable while others are non-relubricatable.

The replacement should preserve the lubrication arrangement required by the machine & compatible housing.

A grease feature on the housing does not automatically prove that every visually compatible insert uses the same lubrication arrangement.

Match the Housing

Wide inner ring bearings are frequently used as inserts within pillow blocks, flange units & other mounted-bearing arrangements.

Timken's UEL family demonstrates this relationship clearly. The same bearing concept appears in related UELP pillow block & UELF flange-mounted configurations.

When replacing only the insert, confirm that its outside-ring geometry, lubrication features & overall dimensions suit the existing housing.

Compare Load Requirements

Published load ratings belong to individual bearing references.

For example, Timken specifies:

Bearing

Dynamic Radial Load Rating

Static Radial Load Rating

UEL209-28

These examples show why increasing bore size should not be treated as the only selection variable.

Expert Tips

Preserve the Suffixes

A bearing reference that appears nearly identical to another can describe a different seal, outside-ring shape or lubrication configuration.

Record the complete marking before ordering.

Do Not Identify the Bearing From Bore Alone

Two bearings can fit the same nominal shaft yet differ in:

► Inner-ring width
► Outer-ring geometry
► Locking system
► Seal arrangement
► Lubrication provision
► Load rating
► Housing compatibility

Dimensional similarity should trigger further checking rather than immediate substitution.

Match the Outer Ring to the Housing Seat

A spherical outside diameter requires the correct spherical housing seat.

Installing an incompatible OD configuration can defeat the intended relationship between bearing & housing.

Install Eccentric Collars in the Correct Direction

For a rotating shaft, Timken instructs the eccentric collar to be turned in the direction of shaft rotation until the mating cams are tightly engaged.

A drift pin can then be used to tap the collar lightly in that direction before the setscrew is tightened.

Where the shaft remains stationary & the outer ring rotates, Timken specifies locking the collar in the opposite direction of rotation.

Do Not Use the Setscrew as the Entire Eccentric-Locking Process

On a self-locking collar bearing, the eccentric cam provides the primary locking action.

The collar must first be properly engaged with the inner-ring cam. The setscrew then provides supplementary locking.

Simply tightening the screw without correctly engaging the eccentric collar does not follow the intended installation procedure.

Inspect the Shaft Before Fitting the Replacement

Extended inner rings rely on the shaft interface.

Look for:

► Fretting
► Scoring
► Corrosion
► Previous setscrew damage
► Dimensional wear
► Burrs
► Contamination

A damaged shaft can compromise a correctly specified replacement bearing.

Trace Repeated Failures Beyond the Insert

A bearing that repeatedly overheats or loosens may be responding to another machinery problem.

Check alignment, shaft condition, housing fit, contamination, lubrication, loading & drive condition before assuming the bearing itself is the sole cause.

Emergency Worksite Breakdown Support provides broader guidance around preparing for machinery failures & unplanned downtime.

Keep Bearing References With Machine Records

Agricultural & industrial equipment can contain several similar-looking inserts.

Recording the complete reference against each machine position makes later replacement considerably more efficient.

Spring Jobsite Prep Getting Your Gear Ready provides additional guidance around inspecting equipment before heavier operating periods.

Keep Bearing Handling Areas Clean

Contamination introduced during maintenance can undermine otherwise careful bearing selection.

Clean the shaft, housing & surrounding work area before installing the replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a wide inner ring bearing?

A wide inner ring bearing is a ball bearing with an inner ring extended beyond the conventional raceway width. The extended ring provides additional shaft support & allows applicable collar or setscrew locking systems to secure the bearing on the shaft.

What is the difference between a wide inner ring bearing & an extended inner ring bearing?

The terms can describe closely related Fafnir bearing designs with extended inner-ring geometry. Timken uses specific series terminology, so the complete bearing reference should determine the actual configuration rather than relying on the generic description alone.

What does an eccentric locking collar do?

The eccentric collar mates with a corresponding eccentric cam on the bearing inner ring. Turning the collar engages the two cam surfaces so the assembly grips the shaft while the setscrew provides supplementary locking.

Which direction should a Timken eccentric collar be tightened?

For a rotating shaft, Timken specifies turning & locking the collar in the direction of shaft rotation. Where the shaft is stationary & the outer ring rotates, the collar is locked in the opposite direction of rotation.

Can a wide inner ring bearing mount directly on a straight shaft?

Applicable Timken wide inner ring designs are intended for straightforward mounting on straight shafts using their specified collar or setscrew locking arrangement without requiring conventional locknuts, washers, shoulders or adapters.

What is the difference between spherical & cylindrical OD wide inner ring bearings?

A cylindrical or straight outside diameter fits a corresponding straight-bored housing. A spherical outside diameter fits a compatible spherical housing seat & allows the mounted arrangement to accommodate limited misalignment.
