Tape Measures for Accurate Trade Measurement
Choose a tape measure for the distance, working environment, required graduation and visibility on site. Industrial Shed’s range covers compact pocket tapes, wide-blade and magnetic-hook models, steel long tapes, fibreglass reel tapes and specialist circumference tapes for building, fabrication, maintenance, landscaping and workshop measurement.
Choose the measuring format
-
Pocket tapes: provide portable measurement for carpentry, electrical, fit-out and workshop work. Five- to eight-metre models balance reach and portability for many trades.
-
Wide-blade tapes: can improve blade standout for one-person measuring, subject to the manufacturer’s stated performance.
-
Magnetic-hook tapes: assist on compatible steel framing and fabricated sections; debris on the magnet or hook can affect the reference point.
-
Steel long tapes: provide a firm graduated blade for longer layouts and must be protected from kinks and corrosion.
-
Fibreglass reel tapes: are flexible and corrosion resistant for landscaping, civil and irregular layouts; check tension and calibration requirements.
-
Circumference and specialist tapes: should be selected for the exact diameter, pipe or inspection method stated by the manufacturer.
Graduations, hook movement and accuracy
Select metric, imperial or dual-scale graduations to match the drawing and site procedure. On many pocket tapes the end hook is designed to move by its own thickness so inside and outside measurements share the same reference. Do not tighten, bend or “repair” a moving hook without confirming the manufacturer’s design.
Blade length, width and standout
Longer or wider is not automatically more accurate. Compare usable reach, blade width, standout, case size and the smallest graduation required. Support the blade across long horizontal spans and avoid twisting it, as sag and viewing angle can affect a reading.
Safe use and care
- Control blade return; do not allow the hook to whip toward hands or faces.
- Wear eye protection where a damaged steel blade could fracture or recoil.
- Inspect the hook, graduations, blade edges and case after drops or heavy use.
- Clean and dry the blade before retraction, especially after outdoor or wet work.
- For documented inspection, use equipment with the required accuracy and verification records.

Tape measure FAQs
Why does the end hook move?
Many hooks compensate for their own thickness when taking inside and outside measurements. Confirm the design before adjusting it.
Should I choose metric-only or dual scale?
Use the units specified on drawings and equipment. Dual scale helps mixed-unit work but can make the blade visually busier.
Does a wider blade guarantee greater accuracy?
No. Width can improve standout, while accuracy depends on the complete design, condition and measuring method.
When should a tape measure be replaced?
Replace or verify it after hook damage, unreadable graduations, sharp blade edges, kinks, case damage or inconsistent readings.
