Surface Preparation for Stronger Adhesion
A surface can look perfectly clean & still need preparation before bonding or sealing.
Soudal Surface Activator is a ready-to-use cleaner, degreaser & adhesion promoter for compatible non-porous surfaces. It is particularly useful when preparing powder-coated aluminium, anodised aluminium & selected plastics including PVC, ABS & PP before applying suitable silicone, MS polymer, SMX sealants or adhesives. For installers, fabricators, glaziers, builders & maintenance teams, it provides a practical preparation step where reliable adhesion depends on the condition of the contact surface.

The important distinction is that Surface Activator isn't simply there to make a substrate look clean. It cleans, degreases & activates compatible non-porous materials before the bond or seal is made.
What Is Soudal Surface Activator?
Soudal Surface Activator is a clear, one-component surface treatment formulated for preparing compatible non-porous substrates before bonding or sealing.
It combines three closely related preparation jobs:
► Cleaning – helps remove unwanted surface contamination
► Degreasing – prepares the contact area by removing grease & residue that may interfere with adhesion
► Activating – promotes adhesion between compatible non-porous surfaces & the sealant or adhesive applied afterwards
The ready-to-use formulation dries quickly & is designed for low consumption, making it practical for both individual installation work & repeat trade use.
Suitable surfaces can include:
► Powder-coated aluminium
► Anodised aluminium
► PVC
► ABS
► PP where compatible
► Glass
► Compatible metals
► Other suitable non-porous substrates
The key phrase is non-porous. Concrete, masonry & other absorbent surfaces behave differently & may require a suitable primer instead.
Why Choose Soudal Surface Activator?
Good adhesion starts before the cartridge is opened.
A finished aluminium profile, plastic component or glass surface may carry grease, handling contamination or other residue even when it appears clean to the eye.
Soudal Surface Activator provides a dedicated preparation step before suitable bonding & sealing work.
Key benefits include:
► Cleans & degreases compatible surfaces
► Promotes adhesion on non-porous substrates
► Ready to use
► Fast drying
► Low consumption
► Clear formulation
► Suitable for regular & textured powder-coated aluminium profiles
► Suitable for anodised aluminium profiles
► Compatible with specified plastics including PVC & ABS
► Suitable for PP where product compatibility has been confirmed

The product is particularly useful when the finished installation depends on reliable contact with a smooth, coated or otherwise non-porous surface.
Common Applications
Powder-Coated Aluminium
Powder coating creates a finished surface, so preparation should be based on the coating rather than simply treating the component as bare aluminium.
Soudal Surface Activator is suitable for regular & textured powder-coated aluminium profiles, making it relevant around appropriate:
► Window systems
► Door systems
► Architectural profiles
► Fabricated aluminium components
► Building installations
► Bonded or sealed aluminium assemblies
Treat the actual contact area where the compatible adhesive or sealant will be applied.
Anodised Aluminium
Anodised aluminium shouldn't automatically be treated like unfinished metal.
Surface Activator is suitable for preparing anodised aluminium profiles before compatible bonding or sealing applications.
For fabricators & installers, identifying the actual finish before preparation helps avoid treating every aluminium component as though its surface behaves identically.
PVC, ABS & PP
“Plastic” isn't specific enough when preparing a surface for adhesion.
Soudal identifies plastics including PVC, ABS & PP for Surface Activator, but plastics, formulations & finishes can vary.
If you're working with an unfamiliar plastic or a component where appearance matters, carry out a preliminary compatibility test before treating the entire bonding area.
Glass & Compatible Metals
Smooth materials such as glass & metal can require careful cleaning & degreasing before suitable adhesives or sealants are applied.
Surface Activator can be used as part of the preparation process on compatible non-porous surfaces where improved adhesion is required.
The adhesive or sealant used afterwards still needs to be suitable for both the substrate & intended application.
Before Silicone, MS Polymer & SMX Products
Surface preparation becomes particularly important where a sealant or adhesive needs dependable contact with a smooth substrate.
Soudal Surface Activator can be used before compatible:
► Silicone sealants
► MS polymer products
► SMX-based sealants
► SMX-based adhesives
► Other suitable bonding products

Preparing a Surface After Removing an Old Joint
Replacing old adhesive or sealant can involve more than cutting away the visible bead.
Residual silicone, adhesive or other contamination may remain on the substrate after mechanical removal.
Deal with unwanted material using the appropriate removal method first then prepare the exposed compatible surface for the replacement product.

Product Selection Guide
Start with two questions:
What is the surface made from?
What needs to happen before the adhesive or sealant is applied?
Non-Porous Surface Needs Adhesion Promotion
Consider Soudal Surface Activator.
It is intended to clean, degrease & activate compatible non-porous materials such as powder-coated aluminium, anodised aluminium, selected plastics, glass & metals.
Surface Is Simply Dirty or Greasy
If the job is general cleaning rather than preparation for bonding or sealing, a dedicated cleaner or degreaser may be more appropriate.
Surface Activator has cleaning properties, but its role is specifically connected to preparing compatible substrates for adhesion.
Old Adhesive or Sealant Is Still Attached
Remove the residue first.
Surface Activator isn't a substitute for an adhesive remover, silicone remover or cured PU foam remover.
The practical sequence is:
► Remove the old material
► Clean remaining contamination
► Identify the exposed substrate
► Prepare it appropriately
► Apply the compatible new adhesive or sealant
Surface Is Porous
Check the complete product system before proceeding.
Concrete, masonry & other absorbent substrates can require a dedicated porous-surface primer rather than Surface Activator.
Surface Has a Decorative Finish
Test a small inconspicuous area first.
Finished surfaces, plastics & coatings can vary considerably even where the underlying material appears similar.
How to Apply Soudal Surface Activator?
Preparation technique matters as much as product choice.
Check the Substrate
Confirm that the material is compatible with Surface Activator & with the adhesive or sealant being applied afterwards.
Carry out a preliminary compatibility test where required.
Use a Clean Cloth
Apply Surface Activator using a clean cloth.
Avoid starting with a rag already carrying oil, adhesive, sealant or workshop contamination.
Wipe in One Direction
Wipe the surface in one direction rather than repeatedly moving contamination backwards & forwards across the bonding area.
Replace the cloth when necessary so removed contamination isn't simply transferred to another part of the surface.
Keep Treatment Inside the Bonding Area
Surface Activator can leave a white haze on some surfaces.
For that reason, apply it only to the area that will actually be bonded or sealed rather than unnecessarily wiping it across visible surrounding finishes.
Allow the Surface to Dry
Let the treated area dry sufficiently before applying the compatible adhesive or sealant.
Don't judge readiness by touching the prepared surface with your fingers because this can introduce fresh contamination.
Make the Bond Within the Working Window
Once the surface has been activated, don't leave the prepared component sitting indefinitely.
Apply the compatible adhesive or sealant within 8 hours of Surface Activator application.
If the installation falls outside the specified preparation window, check the current product instructions before continuing.
Expert Tips
Know the Surface, Not Just the Component
“Window frame” isn't a substrate.
It could mean powder-coated aluminium, anodised aluminium, PVC or another material entirely.
Identify what the adhesive or sealant will physically contact before choosing the preparation method.
Clean-Looking Doesn't Always Mean Bond-Ready
Grease & contamination aren't always obvious.
Prepare the surface according to the requirements of the bonding or sealing system rather than relying only on appearance.
Keep the Cloth Moving in One Direction
The aim is to remove contamination from the contact area—not redistribute it.
Use a clean cloth, wipe consistently & replace the cloth once it becomes contaminated.
Protect Visible Finishes
Because Surface Activator can leave a white haze, don't unnecessarily extend the treatment beyond the area that will be covered by the bond or seal.
This is particularly important around visible powder coating, decorative components & other finished surfaces.
Don't Prepare Tomorrow's Bond Today
Surface activation has a working window.
The compatible adhesive or sealant should be applied within 8 hours, so coordinate preparation with the installation rather than treating components too far in advance.
Keep the Original Container Closed
Pour out only the amount needed for the job then reseal the original container promptly.
Prolonged exposure to air can reduce product effectiveness.
Don't Return Used Product to the Bottle
Once material has been dispensed & used during surface preparation, don't pour the remainder back into the original packaging.
It can carry contamination from the application process into the unused product.
Don't Touch the Surface After Preparation
Freshly prepared means freshly prepared.
Handling the contact area can transfer skin oils or other contamination back onto the substrate.
Removal, Cleaning & Activation Are Different Jobs
A remover deals with unwanted cured or uncured material.
A cleaner deals with contamination.
An activator prepares a compatible substrate to promote adhesion.
One installation can require all three steps, but the products performing them aren't interchangeable.
