UNC, UNF or Metric – Which Thread Is on Your Bolt?

Three bolts can look surprisingly similar from across the bench.

That doesn't make their nuts interchangeable.

UNC means Unified National Coarse.

UNF means Unified National Fine.

Metric threads use a different identification system based around metric dimensions & pitch.

A UNC nut needs to correspond with the thread on the mating bolt or stud. Matching the approximate diameter isn't enough.

How Do You Read a UNC Nut Size?

Take 1″ – 8 UNC.

It tells you three useful things before the nut even reaches the bolt.

1″ = nominal thread diameter.

8 = eight threads per inch.

UNC = Unified National Coarse thread series.

Threads per inch are commonly abbreviated to TPI.

The TPI matches.

The nut runs smoothly along the thread.

You're nearly there — but thread compatibility doesn't automatically confirm suitability for the job.
