Product Selection Guide

Before choosing a timber sealer, ask one question first: what kind of timber surface are you actually protecting?

A dressed deck, weathered hardwood table & rough-sawn coastal boardwalk shouldn't automatically receive the same treatment.

Start With Dressed or Rough-Sawn Timber

This is the most important split in the Lanotec timber range.

Timber Seal Plus has a higher lanolin concentration & Lanotec specifically advises against using it for dressed domestic decking & furniture.

Check Whether the Timber Is New or Weathered

New timber isn't automatically ready for a coating simply because construction has finished.

Lanotec advises allowing new green timber structures to settle for a minimum of three months before applying the coating system. Freshly milled or green timber can contain resins, tannins & moisture that affect penetration & surface appearance.

If timber is still green, Lanotec advises limiting treatment to inside joints, bolts & fastenings while allowing the timber itself to weather further before full application.

Older timber creates another question: has the surface simply dried or has it turned grey from weathering?

Where restoration is desired, Lanotec recommends lightly sanding grey weathered timber & cleaning it thoroughly before applying Timber Seal.

Look at Existing Coatings

Previous treatment doesn't necessarily rule Timber Seal out, but the condition of that treatment matters.

Lanotec states that Timber Seal can be used on timber previously coated with decking oil once the timber is showing signs of dryness.

Don't assume a new application should simply go over a surface that is still saturated, dirty or carrying an incompatible finish.

Inspect first.

Match Protection to Exposure

A shaded outdoor table & a coastal jetty don't live the same life.

Understand Coverage Before Ordering

Older, more porous timber can drink considerably more treatment than new hardwood.

Lanotec's approximate Timber Seal coverage guide is:

► Old hardwood: 8–10 m²/L
► New softwood: 8–10 m²/L
► Old softwood: 6–8 m²/L

Timber Seal Plus provides approximate coverage of 6–8 m²/L, depending on timber condition & porosity.

Measure the area first, identify the timber condition & use coverage as a planning guide rather than assuming one rate applies universally.

Prepare the Timber Properly

A protective treatment can't properly show you the timber underneath if dirt, mould or unstable surface material is still in the way.

Timber should be clean & dry before application.

Lanotec's current technical guidance recommends high-pressure cleaning where appropriate & allowing the timber around 24 hours to dry before applying Timber Seal.

Previously untreated timber should also be treated appropriately for mould or fungal spores before Timber Seal is applied.

Where timber has weathered grey & restoration is required, light sanding can expose a more suitable surface before cleaning & treatment.

Apply Only What the Timber Needs

More product isn't automatically more protection.

Lanotec describes timber as behaving like a wick: it draws in what it needs.

Over-application can leave excess product sitting at the surface & cause tackiness.

Shake the product thoroughly before use & apply an even coat using an appropriate method such as:

► Sprayer
► Roller
► Lambswool applicator

Colder conditions may require additional agitation before application.

Pay Attention to End Grain

The ends of timber deserve more attention than their size suggests.

End grain can provide an easier pathway for moisture ingress.

Lanotec recommends treating end grains with Type A Grease for additional protection where appropriate.

That small detail can matter around exposed posts, rails, structural members & outdoor timber assemblies.

Know When It's Time to Recoat

Your deck can give you a simple clue without waiting for visible deterioration.

Lanotec recommends a basic water-drop check.

Place a small amount of water onto the timber.

If it beads on the surface, protection is still present.

If the water absorbs quickly, recoating may be due.

Lanotec generally recommends annual reapplication or as required depending on exposure, wear & timber condition.

► Don't assume annual means exactly twelve months. Exposure, traffic, weather & timber condition should determine inspection & recoating.
► Check high-wear areas separately. Steps, traffic paths, edges & exposed sections can lose protection sooner than sheltered areas.
► Use the right application method. Spraying, rolling or a lambswool pad can suit different surfaces & project sizes.
► Let the treatment dry properly. Lanotec's Timber Seal technical information recommends approximately six hours drying time under suitable conditions.
► Keep coastal exposure in mind. Salt air, rain & sun can justify closer inspection than sheltered residential timber.
