One Universal Plug Across Solid, Hollow & Plasterboard Materials

Concrete today, hollow brick tomorrow, plasterboard on the next fit-out—does every substrate need a completely different plug? ICCONS® Absolute Plugs are Friulsider X1 EVO universal nylon plugs designed to work across a broad range of solid, hollow & plasterboard base materials, giving trades a versatile fixing option for everyday construction, fit-out, restoration & maintenance work.

The advantage is versatility without ignoring the fixing details. X1 EVO Absolute Plugs use a high-quality polyamide body with grooves that promote radial expansion & anti-rotation barbs that help stabilise the plug while the screw is driven. ICCONS® lists applications across concrete, stone, solid & hollow brick, solid & hollow block, lightweight concrete & plasterboard.

What Are ICCONS® Absolute Plugs?

ICCONS® Absolute Plugs are Friulsider X1 EVO universal plugs manufactured from Nylon PA6 polyamide. Unlike a fixing intended for only one solid substrate, the X1 EVO is designed for use across numerous common building materials.

The range spans 5 mm to 14 mm plug diameters, with different lengths & compatible screw sizes available to suit the fixing requirement.

Key characteristics include:

► Universal substrate capability – suitable for nominated solid, hollow & plasterboard materials
► Polyamide grooves – designed to produce radial expansion as the screw is inserted
► Anti-rotation barbs – help prevent the plug turning inside the drilled hole
► Broad screw compatibility – compatible with suitable screws according to the ICCONS® sizing guidance, including nominated metric screws
► Pre-installed or through fixing – supports different installation arrangements
► Indoor & outdoor use – the plug itself is suitable for applicable internal or external installations
► Nine current plug sizes – from compact 5 x 25 mm plugs through to 14 x 70 mm configurations

Universal doesn't mean one size fits every hole. Plug diameter, length, screw diameter, fixture thickness, substrate & installation method still need to correspond.

Why Choose ICCONS® Absolute Plugs?

Fewer Plug Types Across Mixed-Material Work

A maintenance technician may encounter concrete, block, brick & plasterboard before lunch. Carrying a universal plug family that covers multiple nominated substrates can simplify everyday fixing work where the application suits a nylon plug.

That versatility is particularly useful across building maintenance, fit-out, restoration & general construction environments where the substrate changes from room to room.

Stable Installation While the Screw Is Driven

What happens when a wall plug begins spinning instead of expanding? Installation becomes slower & the fixing may fail to develop the intended grip.

The X1 EVO incorporates anti-rotation barbs to help stabilise the plug while the screw is inserted, while grooves in the polyamide body encourage radial expansion.

One Range from 5 mm to 14 mm

A lightweight fixture & a larger mounting point shouldn't automatically receive the same plug. The Absolute Plug family provides multiple diameters & lengths so installers can select around the connection rather than forcing one plug size into every task.

Current plug-only sizes include:

► 5 x 25 mm
► 6 x 30 mm
► 6 x 50 mm
► 8 x 40 mm
► 8 x 60 mm
► 10 x 50 mm
► 10 x 70 mm
► 12 x 60 mm
► 14 x 70 mm

Suitable for Pre-Installed & Through Fixing

Fixture geometry can change the easiest way to assemble the connection. ICCONS® specifies the X1 EVO for use as either a pre-installed fixing or a through fixing.

That gives installers flexibility to prepare the plug first or work through a compatible fixture where the application permits.

Compatible with Different Screw Types

The plug & screw work as a pair. ICCONS® specifies compatibility with suitable screws according to the sizing guide, including metric screw options across relevant Absolute Plug sizes.

Choosing the correct screw diameter is important because screw insertion is what activates the plug's expansion.

Common Applications

Concrete & Solid Masonry

Solid substrates provide a firm surrounding material for the expanding plug to work against. ICCONS® lists concrete, stone, solid brick & solid block among the suitable base materials for the X1 EVO.

Typical work can include suitable brackets, fixtures, building components & general wall-mounted items where the required fixing falls within the plug's capability.

For jobs moving beyond general-purpose plugs into heavier anchoring, Anchor Bolts provides a separate fastening pathway.

Hollow Brick & Hollow Block

A fixing that behaves predictably in solid concrete may need to react differently once cavities appear behind the surface. The universal X1 EVO design is also intended for nominated hollow brick & hollow block applications.

Correct drilling remains important because aggressive drilling can damage the internal structure of some hollow masonry materials.

Plasterboard

Not every fixing point lands conveniently on a stud. ICCONS® includes plasterboard among the nominated base materials for the Absolute Plug, making the range useful for applicable lightweight fixtures & general fit-out work.

Fixture weight, board condition & the actual load still need to be considered. Where an installation exceeds the suitability of a nylon plug, use a fixing system intended for the required duty.

Lightweight Concrete

Lightweight concrete isn't simply conventional concrete with a different name. Its material characteristics can change how a fixing engages with the substrate.

The X1 EVO is listed by ICCONS® for lightweight concrete, giving installers another nominated material within the same universal plug family.

Building Restoration

Existing buildings rarely present one perfectly consistent substrate. Renovation & restoration work can uncover concrete, brick, block, lightweight materials & plasterboard across different areas of the same property.

ICCONS® specifically identifies building restoration as an application for the Absolute Plug, where its broad base-material compatibility can be particularly practical.

Façades & Framework

Longer plug configurations become useful when the fixture itself adds depth to the connection. ICCONS® lists façades & framework among X1 EVO applications, with longer 6, 8 & 10 mm diameter plug options available within the range.

Always establish the fixture thickness, substrate & required embedment before selecting plug length.

Short or Long Plug?

Two plugs can share the same diameter while solving different fixture-depth requirements. ICCONS® offers 6 mm plugs in 30 & 50 mm lengths, 8 mm plugs in 40 & 60 mm lengths & 10 mm plugs in 50 & 70 mm lengths.

Longer doesn't automatically mean better. Choose sufficient length for the intended installation while following the applicable embedment & hole-depth requirements.

What Size Hole Should Be Drilled?

A universal plug still needs a correctly sized hole. ICCONS® specifies the drill diameter to correspond with the nominal plug diameter—for example, an 8 mm X1 EVO requires an 8 mm drilled hole.

Use suitable Concrete Cutting & Drilling Tools & the correct drill bit for the base material.

What Screw Size Fits?

Too small a screw may not expand the plug as intended, while an unsuitable oversized screw can create a different problem. ICCONS® provides screw-width guidance for each X1 EVO size.

Examples include 3.5–4 mm screws with the 5 mm plug, 5–6 mm screws with the 8 mm plug, 6 mm screws with the 10 mm plug & 10 mm screws with the 14 mm plug.

For a broader explanation of how screws, plugs & other fixings differ, read the Fastener Guide Bolts Screws Anchors.

Pre-Installed or Through Fixing?

How the fixture reaches the wall can determine the cleaner installation method. The X1 EVO can be used as a pre-installed plug or for suitable through-fixing arrangements.

Confirm that the selected plug length still provides the required engagement after fixture thickness is taken into account.

Expert Tips

Identify the Base Material Before Reaching for the Drill

A wall surface can conceal a very different material behind the finish. Concrete, hollow brick, lightweight block & plasterboard respond differently to drilling even when the same universal plug is suitable for the final fixing.

Establish what you're actually drilling into before selecting the drilling method.

Don't Oversize the Hole

Anti-rotation features can't compensate for a badly oversized hole. Match the drill diameter to the nominated plug size & use a suitable bit in good condition.

An accurately prepared hole gives the plug body the surrounding material it needs to expand effectively.

Treat Hollow Masonry More Carefully

Faster drilling isn't always better drilling. Excessive impact can damage webs or internal faces in hollow brick & block, potentially changing the material available for the fixing.

Use an appropriate drilling technique for the substrate rather than applying the same method used for dense concrete automatically.

Pair the Screw with the Plug

The screw isn't an accessory added after plug selection—it activates the fixing. Follow the ICCONS® sizing guidance so the screw diameter corresponds with the selected X1 EVO.

For more context on why the fastener itself matters to the completed connection, read Why Good Fasteners Matter More Than the Tool You Drive Them With.

Account for Fixture Thickness

The plug still needs to engage correctly after passing through or sitting behind the fixture. Brackets, battens, frames & other components add thickness between the screw head & substrate.

Check this dimension before choosing between standard & longer plug configurations.

Don't Turn a Universal Plug into a Heavy-Duty Anchor

Versatility has a boundary. The Absolute Plug is a universal nylon fixing for a broad range of nominated substrates, but that doesn't make it a substitute for an engineered mechanical or chemical anchor where higher loads or project-specific performance are required.

For heavier or more specialised fixing requirements, compare Structural Fasteners & Bolts.

Prepare the Fixing Kit Before Moving Between Rooms

Mixed-material fit-outs are where a universal plug earns its place in the toolbox. Keeping several X1 EVO diameters, compatible screws & the corresponding drill bits together can reduce unnecessary trips back to the workshop or vehicle.

Why Buy ICCONS® Absolute Plugs From Industrial Shed?

The value of a universal plug is greatest when the rest of the fixing setup is ready to work with it. Industrial Shed brings ICCONS® Absolute Plugs together with drilling equipment, compatible fasteners & wider anchoring products for maintenance teams, builders, installers & other Australian trades.

Nine plug sizes make it easier to carry a useful spread without treating every wall as the same fixing problem. Smaller diameters cover compact fixing requirements, longer configurations accommodate deeper assemblies & the wider range extends to 14 mm for larger compatible screws.

For recurring fastening requirements & trade quantities, Trade support Solutions provides a direct support pathway.

Where crews need frequently used fasteners, tools & consumables maintained across active work areas, on-site & workshop Services provides additional supply support.

Different Walls. One More Versatile Fixing Kit.

The useful question isn't whether every wall is the same—it clearly isn't. The advantage of the ICCONS® Absolute Plug is having one universal plug family designed to work across many of the substrates trades regularly encounter, from concrete & solid brick through to hollow block, lightweight concrete & plasterboard.

Carry the sizes that match the work, pair them with the correct screws & prepare each substrate appropriately. That gives installers a practical fixing system that can move between different areas of a building without reaching for a completely different plug family every time the wall construction changes.

Choose ICCONS® Absolute Plugs for versatile everyday fixing across compatible solid, hollow & plasterboard building materials.
