Manufactured from durable high-speed steel (HSS), this BSW taper tap features a classic 55° thread angle with rounded roots and crests — the traditional British Standard Whitworth form developed by Sir Joseph Whitworth in 1841. The taper lead (eight threads of gradual engagement) enables easier entry into pre-drilled holes, reducing breakage and improving cutting control. With a 1/4" nominal diameter, 20 threads per inch (TPI) and a recommended drill diameter of approximately 5.1 mm, this tap is suitable for use in a variety of machinable materials and can be used by hand or in general machine tapping operations.
