Size the pump to the cylinder

Pump selection begins with the cylinder: single- or double-acting operation, required oil volume, maximum pressure and desired advance speed. Reservoir capacity, valve arrangement, drive source and hose connection then determine system compatibility.

Reservoir, valve and drive source

Enerpac notes that two-speed hand pumps reduce effort on larger systems and that powered pumps are better suited to frequent or multi-cylinder work. Verify every component at the same rated pressure. Alemlube, Enerpac, Kincrome and SP Tools pumps must be connected to compatible cylinders, valves, hoses and couplers—not selected by brand alone.

Pair the pump with compatible equipment

Hydraulic Equipment provides the system overview, Hydraulic Rams provides the actuator choice and Shop Presses & Vices shows an installed use case. Related collections: Hydraulic Equipment, Hydraulic Rams, Shop Presses & Vices.

Hydraulic Pumps: frequently asked questions

Do I need a single-speed or two-speed hand pump?

Two-speed pumps move the cylinder quickly at low load, then switch to high pressure with lower effort. Single-speed units may suit small cylinders and occasional controlled work.

How large should the pump reservoir be?

Add the oil volume required by every connected cylinder at full extension, then allow the margin specified by the manufacturer. Reservoir size is not the same as usable oil volume.

Can a single-acting pump run a double-acting cylinder?

Not correctly. Double-acting cylinders require controlled oil flow to both sides of the piston, so use a compatible pump and valve arrangement.
